The Utah State Fair 2009

The State Fair + My Holga = Love.

State fairs have always intrigued me. There is something about the magic and mystery of the whole ordeal. For a little kid there is the awe of the carnival and for me as I grow up it becomes the awe of the memory and the nostalgia which follows from the previous years. Funnel cake and deep fried Oreos are a must. Anything deep fried is a must actually, which then becomes every booth offering food. Then the rides. The Zipper, the farris wheel, the Starship 2000. They are all enchanting and lit up as screaming comes from the seats. This ride in particular is the swings which lift you up and shoot you off to the sides screaming as you soar above the rest of the amusements. Memories are always hazy, which is why I chose to shoot many nostalgic subjects with a Holga, a cheap, unreliable plastic toy camera, acting as our memories. Sometimes hazy, sometimes strange colors, and always not the way it actually was.

Musee Mecanique [The Mechanical Museum], San Francisco.

I'm not exactly sure what kind of game that first one is, but apparently it's an arcade game from some point in time when it was appropriate to abuse children? Nonetheless, sweet but creepy museum off of fisherman's wharf.

Also. I need ideas for upcoming photo projects. Such as religious conflict in Sarajevo and what not. If you know of something, or just want to tell me a sweet place to go, let me know. Thanks, I'm stumped.

Monte Alto Coffee, Jarabacoa (Outtakes)

Outtakes of a photo essay I did of a completely organic coffee plantation, showing the whole process from beans to the cup. I'm in the process of trying to get it published. So I guess we'll see. If not, it'll show up here I'm sure.

Button Me Up Earrings

Recently I photographed some earrings a neighbor made fora business she just started up. They're cute earrings made out of awesome buttons she finds. It was my first product shoot and I feel like it was alright. To check out more of their earrings and to purchase some, go to their site.

Chalkboard Tribute to Ash Mae & Carl

Last weekend I got to have set up this wonder photo backdrop at a friend's wedding using their wedding quilt and a chalkboard. What people came up with were amazing and luckily these cute people had equally cute friends that participated. To see more of what people wrote or to order prints for yourself, go here!

The View.

the view out of the living room in santo domingo, taken during the week of darkness in which we had about 5 hours of electricity during the entire week.

Mr. and Mrs. Cara and Steve Reese.

I came to the conclusion that I really love photographing receptions (as apparent by the vast number of reception photos from this wedding). Maybe it's just the mood I'm in, though, while choosing the photos. It doesn't help, though, that the reception was so beautiful. It was held in a greenhouse and catered by Sub Zero (an ice cream shop that makes the ice cream from liquid nitrogen=awesome) and had a photobooth. The wedding was also very beautiful and I love this couple. The first time I met them together, we tried to go take engagements but there was a traffic accident on the highway preventing us from getting to Spanish Fork--and so Cara drove the wrong way on the highway to get us off. And that sealed the deal, since then, I have loved them. So, congratulations on finally married! And if you want to see more of the pictures, just go on over to my proofing site.

Becky and Travis--Film

And now for the Holga images from the day:

I just really love working with my Holga. There's a definite magic about it and I wish I did it more. So, if you want your wedding, engagements, whatever shot with my magic plastic camera, let me know, because I would love to do it.
