Saans Gallery Exhibit: Working Identities

This last week I took down my exhibit, Working Identities, up in Salt Lake at Saans Gallery. It was up for their monthly art walks from January-February. These images are from the gallery opening back in January (the images with the people in them were taken by the gallery director and in shop photographer, Tom). The show is currently broken up with a few images in the Kennedy Center on BYU campus for their Hunger Banquet exhibit to promote human dignity within poverty. The rest of the images are in my basement with my pending darkroom until September when they will be in the Chapman Library in Salt Lake. I also have a piece in the Mayhew exhibit on BYU campus in the fine art building in an exhibit to be judged later this week. It's an image I made with my Holga, so it's something new, so if you get a chance, go see that.

I will also be in Miami next week, Portland in April, then San Antonio, London, Bosnia, Vienna from May-June, Lost Coast of California in July. I have my work cut out for me, so get excited for plenty of new work on my blog.

Romulus

If you've ever listened to a Sufjan Stevens song, you have probably cried just listening to how beautiful his imagery from his songs are. There are a few in particular that when I listen to, I get a specific image in my head. I've always wanted to translate these images to photographs, and recently I tried to do just that, realizing that it is much harder than one would imagine.
The song which inspired this image is "Romulus", off his CD "Greetings from Michigan: The Great Lake State". For those who haven't heard it, go listen. But those who won't ever, it's about possibly his (he sings from many points of view) grandfather dying and how his mother "didn't seem to care, she smoked in her room and colored her hair." This picture doesn't portray quite what I wanted to, but I think it still works.

This image was taken in my bathroom, after stripping everything out of it and making it empty. A wonderful artist who I used to live with before she left for grad school in Germany, Amanda, was willing to pose for me. Thank you Amanda, and thank you Sufjan Stevens.

RIP Toms Shoes

Today I threw away my first pair of Toms Shoes I bought nearly two years ago. I love them, but it was time. I took this picture back in September, and they had still been worn for months after that, nearly daily. They were is quite rough shape when I finally decided they needed to go, but it had to happen. And now I'm being pathetic and dedicating a blog post to a pair of canvas shoes. But really, they were awesome.

The Parking Lot

My work shares a parking lot with some interesting places. There is a beautiful old building with symmetrical staircases leading up to the doors. There is also a Chinese restaurant that has a sign that says "closed" on one side and "now open" on the other. It has been closed since I moved to Provo four years ago. There is also a Greyhound station right behind us, giving us a lot trouble at work, but I think eventually I will do a photo series of portraits of people who ride the Greyhound. Could be exciting.

Boys with Guns

Images from a low key photo shoot I did last week of twit fantastic boys. I wanted to play with the idea of just being a kid, but juxtaposing childhood with growing up and having to be serious, but then again how kids can be so serious and things at times.

Analogous

Analogous image for my color photography class. Thanks to Lindsey and for the old man at the meat market for humoring my Spanish when I bought the fish.

E-6 Film Developed by Hand

I have been wanting to learn how to develop color film for a while, as intimidating as all 6 chemicals and specific temperatures are. For my color photography class I am doing a presentation on E-6 film, and so my teacher allowed us to have his chemicals and learn how to do it. Here are two of my images from my first successful roll (note, not my first attempted roll). It was shot on a Holga, so they are dark and rough, but that just means I need a medium format camera.

The Subway, Zion's National Park, Utah

A while back, as in about 7 months ago, I hiked this slot canyon in Zion's National Park. It's been a while since then and my recent essay due on Karl Marx has inspired me to edit and upload pictures from this trip. I did a post a while back, but figured I should do a complete photo essay.

Belly Dancer in High Key

Recently Shalee from Back Star Dance allowed me to photograph her for an assignment in my studio class. The assignment was to make a high key portrait. The first one was my favorite and the one that I turned in, but the other two were my backup favorites. She and another one of her friends came in for a session with me, more to come later of her friend.

Not so secret spots

Utah Lake and the Provo airport are two of my not so secret spots in Provo to go to when I'm bored or need to get out. I was recently doing a photoshoot at Utah Lake and saw a small plane coming in, coming in two of my favorite not so secret spots in Provo.
